Accessibility Videos – Live Now

Our two Accessibility Project videos are now live! To watch “An Introduction to Personal Planning & Representation Agreements in BC” and “Nidus Registry – An Introduction” – please visit this page. These educational videos feature personal, real-life stories from people across British Columbia, highlighting the usefulness of personal planning and Representation Agreements.

What is personal planning? How is it different from estate planning? What if I have a Will and an Enduring Power of Attorney – am I covered? What if I can’t make any of these documents? What will happen to me in an emergency if I can’t speak for myself? Learn the answers to these questions and more by attending a webinar presented by Nidus and hosted by partnering community organizations. There will be a short period for Q&A.

We are pleased to be collaborating with our event hosts, Huntington Society of Canada, BC Chapter, Plan InstituteBC Association of Community Response Networks (BC CRN), Parkinson Society BC, and Memorial Society of BC for our webinars in early 2024.

🗓️ Register now to attend one of our video launch + Q&A webinars in the new year! All are welcome:

Personal Planning Month

October is Personal Planning Month! Personal planning is about making arrangements for while you are alive but you may need assistance due to an illness, injury or disability.

Why is Personal Planning so important?

People are living longer lives–and disability, injury, and illness are becoming more common, and inevitable for more people. It is important to plan for these circumstances in the same way that many people are encouraged to explore disability insurance options and not just life insurance.

Personal planning covers preparation for all four areas of your life: health care, personal care, legal affairs and financial affairs.

Why shouldn’t I just keep things informal?

Personal planning does not replace informal help provided by your friends and family. Rather, by making legal documents for personal planning you can give your personal supporters the legal authority necessary to help you. The best time to do personal planning is before a crisis occurs.

Ready to take action?

Thank you to the BC Association of Social Workers (BCASW) for including us in the Spring/Summer edition, 2023, 45(2) and for allowing us to share this article with the public.

Our article provides a comprehensive overview of Representation Agreements (RAs). It aims to address the confusion surrounding different types of RAs, who can create them, and their purpose. We believe that understanding these important legal documents is essential both for professionals like social workers and individuals seeking to plan for their future. You can read the full article by clicking here.

Federal Budget 2023 and the RDSP

The recent federal budget addressed accessibility to the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) for adults with developmental disabilities. This is good news for other provinces and territories. It is not a concern for British Columbia.

In BC, adults may make a Representation Agreement under section 7 (called RA7 for short) and avoid the piecemeal and temporary solutions as seen in the federal budget 2023. There are many other benefits to the RA7 – not just access to the RDSP. Groups in other provinces see BC’s RA7 as a model.
